I find that sad.

The idea that we still send men underground, burrowing like moles to collect coal so we can burn it, as we have been doing for thousands of years, to create the power I need to write this column on a tiny, incredibly powerful, wireless computer I paid $229 for, bothers me.

And the 25 deaths in a West Virginia coal mine last month are cause for deep grief, while the 2,500 coal-mining deaths in the United States since 1983 are cause for gape-mouthed awe and depression.

We mostly get power from burning things. Over time, man could draw a picture of a guy being killed in a coal-mining accident on a cave wall, write about it on animal skin, write about it on paper, set it in type and print it, explain it via telegraph, report it via telephone, share it on the radio, send the tale around the world by teletype to be told on television, fax word of the disaster, e-mail it and tweet it and the story would be nearly unchanged.

It's an unchanging form of death caused by an unchanging form of energy reported via an ever-changing technology.
