IEA Sees Solar Power to Provide Quarter of World Electricity by 2050 CRIENGLISH.com

The Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated Tuesday that solar electricity will represent up to 20 percent to 25 percent of global electricity by 2050.

Based on two latest solar power reports published at the Mediterranean Solar Plan Conference held in Spain, Nobuo Tanaka, Executive Director of IEA, predicted that the solar photovaltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies will see significant development in the coming decades.

"The combination of solar photovoltaics and concentrating solar power offers considerable prospects for enhancing energy security while reducing energy-related CO2 emissions by almost six billion tonnes per year by 2050," he was quoted in IEA's news release.

The agency forecasted that, combinedly, the PV and CSP technologies could generate 9,000 Terawatt hours of power in 2050, accounting around a quarter of anticipated world electricity output.

However, the long-term development of solar technology requires continued governmental funding and favorable regulatory environment.
