Building boom at Camp Pendleton San Diego Union Tribune

Camp Pendleton, the vast Marine Corps base abutting San Diego and Orange counties, is being transformed by a $3 billion construction boom. No corner of the installation is being left untouched, as decaying structures are renovated or replaced and facilities are added to support a growing force of Marines cycling into the Afghanistan war zone.

The renewal comes amid one of the largest Defense Department building programs in history, with annual spending on military construction more than doubling from $10 billion to a peak of $25 billion in 2009, the Pentagon said.

On top of that, federal stimulus funds pumped $7.4 billion into the Pentagon budget, most of it for military construction, renovation and energy-efficiency projects through 2013. Those improvements — including remodeled barracks, new child care centers and solar-powered generators — touch every major Navy and Marine Corps base in San Diego County.

Camp Pendleton is getting one of the most intensive makeovers. It is the biggest infrastructure overhaul ever for the 125,000-acre base, where 64,000 troops and civilians live and work. The process started in 2007 and will last for at least two more years.
