Bord Gáis powers Sunday Business Post

After a hectic year in 2009, Bord Gáis chief executive John Mullins still has a ‘‘very full inbox’’ of plans for the growing utility company.

Last year, the company recruited more than 200,000 electricity customers through its ‘Big Switch’ initiative, raised €900 million from international investors and bought wind farm operator SWS in a deal worth more than €500 million.

There is little sign of a slowdown by Mullins, who took over as chief executive of the semi-state gas firm in December 2007 after working at Bioverda, Greenstar and the ESB.

The government won’t finalise the Bord’s 2009 results until May 12, but Mullins said the results would be ‘‘robust’’ and show a strong balance sheet, despite three drops in gas prices in the last year, a depreciation of assets and some bad debt provisions.
