GlobalWatt signs deal for manufacturing equipment ABC12.com

(05/11/10) -- Solar panel manufacturer GlobalWatt took another step Tuesday toward setting up shop in Saginaw.

The company's CEO announced a new partnership with KUKA Systems, a Michigan-based robotics company.

KUKA's North American operations are based in Sterling Heights.

At a news conference today, the leaders of both KUKA and GlobalWatt talked about the deal. KUKA is supplying the robotic assembly system that GlobalWatt will use to make solar panels.

This latest announcement is part of the master plan by GlobalWatt to employ up to 50 people by year's end. In five years, the company hopes to have 500 working in a converted automotive parts plant.

GlobalWatt announced it was coming to Michigan in December 2009 after being awarded state and local tax breaks.

KUKA has been around since 1898. Its CEO says it supplies equipment for everything from solar manufacturers to the automotive industry.

Its biggest customer is Ford Motor Company.
