German Solar-Panel Market Growth May Slow, Phoenix Chief Says BusinessWeek

May 11 (Bloomberg) -- Solar-panel installations in Germany, the world’s largest market in 2009, may slow their growth in the coming years as other countries catch up, Phoenix Solar AG Chief Executive Officer Andreas Haenel said.

New construction probably will “level off” at about 5,000 megawatts a year over the next few years, Haenel said in an interview. That would be less than the 6,000 megawatts that Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen has forecast will be installed in 2010.

Federal lawmakers in Germany last week passed a law that reduces consumer-paid subsidies for producers of solar power earned by operators including Phoenix Solar and SAG Solarstrom AG. Germany, with about 8,000 megawatts of photovoltaic panels currently producing power, accounted for about half of global panel sales in 2009, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.
