The first workshop session of the Independent Science Advisors for the California Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan took place last week in Ontario, Calif. Their task is to advise the government and other interested parties – of which there are many– not so much on where to put solar power plants, but on where not to put them.

"The primary flow of information today is not from the scientists to you all, but the other way," said Wayne Spencer of the Oregon-based Conservation Biology Institute, lead scientist in the group, at the start of a two-day gathering. "They're here to learn, listen to and absorb your concerns, your questions."

More than 200 large-scale solar projects have been proposed in California, the majority on desert land. Dozens more proposals are on file in Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. Concerns have been expressed about potential threats to endangered and rare plants and animals, aquifers, cultural artifacts and scenic views.
