GLADSTONE - Students at Gladstone High School will soon learn hands-on how solar energy works by using solar power generated in their own backyard. Along with having solar panels installed on school grounds, the high school will also participate in a program to study energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Gladstone High School was recently awarded a grant from Energy Works Michigan, a program of Recycle Ann Arbor, which will allow them to participate in the Michigan Renewable Schools Program (MRSP), and means they'll soon be studying and using solar energy.

As part of the program, the school will receive a $50,000 2 kilowatt solar cell panel on an awning. They will also receive a weather station with online monitoring equipment for public viewing, a subscription to Planet Footprint's environmental score-keeping services, energy lesson plans, professional development for teachers and a program display installed in the school.

Superintendent Jay Kulbertis said the solar display will be installed in June, in time for the upcoming school year. The high school science classes will be able to use the first-hand data as they study energy efficiency and renewable energy. By partnering with Energy Works Michigan, the school will have access to lesson plans and professional development for English, math, and social studies teachers who are interested in integrating this content into their instructional planning, said Kulbertis.
