Wind energy sector adds Kansas jobs Kansas City Star

A Denmark company that makes wind-turbine components is opening a manufacturing facility in Junction City, Kan.

Jupiter Group plans to move into 41,000 square feet of existing space and be operating by Aug. 1. Initially the facility will have 15 to 30 employees and over the next few years could see up to 100 additional workers. The company is making a $2.4 million investment.

“We’re proud to welcome an international group like the Jupiter Group to Kansas,” said Gov. Mark Parkinson in a statement.

The state, which has the second-best potential for wind energy in the country, has been recruiting companies that supply and serve the industry. In the last year, besides the Jupiter Group, Siemens Energy announced it was building a wind turbine factory in Hutchinson, Kan., that will employ 400 people and Tindall Corp. said it would open a facility to Newton, Kan., that would build towers for the turbines and bring 400 additional jobs.

Jupiter produces the housing that covers a turbine’s generator and other components and also makes spinners that allow the blades to turn. Its website says it opens production facilities near the markets its serves because of transportation costs. The company has an assembly plant in Pensacola, Fla.

Jupiter’s decision to open a plant in Junction City was facilitated by the Kansas Department of Commerce and the Junction City-Geary County Economic Development Commission.

Jupiter looked at several locations in North America, according to the Kansas Department of Commerce. The company picked Kansas to give it economical access to customers in the Midwest and a foothold in a region where the wind industry is expected to grow.

State and local officials offer a range of economic incentives for renewable-energy projects, including up to $5 million in bond financing, elimination of property tax on new equipment, income tax credits, sales tax exemptions and training assistance.
