Alderney's power plans take major step forward Channel Television

Alderney's plans to export power to the UK have taken a major step forward.

The island's tidal energy developer has struck a deal to supply 2000 megawatts of electricity to the National Grid.

Alderney's tidal streams are regarded as some of the strongest in the world and businessmen have been looking at ways of harnessing this resource for several years.

Experts say the tides which surround the island could contain enough energy to power more than a million homes and as Alderney's population is just 2200, this potentially massive amount of electricity would need to be exported.

Alderney Renewable Energy is currently the only business licensed to exploit the islands waters for commercial gain. The company struck a deal to supply the French grid 18 months ago but has now linked up with the country that could become its biggest customer, Britain.
